Thank you to everyone who left comments on my last post about the lack of bees both here in the garden and at the allotment. It seems that bees and other flying insects are doing ok, they are just not here at the moment. At the allotment we have lots of flowers and a water source and have now added small dishes of water ( thanks for the tip Sarah!) in the garden to drink from (with pebbles and an easy way to get out if they fall in) in the hope of encouraging more creatures to come.
At the moment it is hot enough here to melt tarmac as well as us! The temperature has reached 38 degrees today and I hate it! The last few nights have been sticky and sleepless despite having a fan in the bedrooms. It is forecast to cool down tomorrow and we are living in hope of rain. The garden is parched as we have been watering just the most precious plants. G has been watering the allotment fruit and veg late at night when it cools down but rain would be more than welcome. Often the water tank at the allotment is empty because other's have beaten us to it. It fills very s-l-o-w-l-y ☹
A couple of weeks ago G created a bark chip base for our bench, which is in a shady area during the afternoon, so that we will have somewhere to sit in the evenings once it's cool enough.......
At the moment I'm typing this with a cool fan at my back and I'm still HOT. I can't think straight, I'm not hungry and I dare not even think about the cost of the electricity we are using to power the fans 😏

Boy that is hot for you guys. It's a 106 here today but that is normal for us. Plus its a dry heat. I don't know if its a humid heat that you are experiencing - that would be hard to cope with. 106 here, you hardly break a sweat unless you are doing heavy labor.

Yes, Debby, it's humid and sticky especially at night so that it's hard to sleep. Today, Wednesday, has been much cooler thankfully. We are just not used to this level of heat 🔥😳
DeleteI can't believe the heat you are having. Here that is almost a normal summer temperature. Most homes have central air though and that helps things a great deal. I am not a heat person as once it reaches a certain temperature we end up getting tornado watches and warnings. We went through a series of those last night once again.

Not many homes in the UK have air conditioning and we are never prepared for this kind of heat. Tornados are really scary things Jackie. It must be very worrying for you.
DeleteThe heat can be so uncomfortable. I use ice packs. I find it is much cooler up in the mountains, and am relieved that I found my cabin when I did.
ReplyDeleteIt must be wonderful to retreat to the cool air of the mountains during very hot weather. Ice packs have helped a little here but its so sticky and humid.

DeleteI don't think you need to worry too much about the cost of using a fan - currently it's somewhere between 5p and 12p for 12 hours. Not a great deal based on how rare it is that we need one. I've used one when it's been needed, and not noticed any jump in the electric bill. Last year I bought an air con unit - I live in South and each year we have a few nights where sleep isn't possible because of the extreme (to me) heat. This year it was lovely to have it on for the 2 nights - I decided it was worth the extra. Back to the fan now though. I enjoy reading of your happenings, thank you for sharing. Elaine
