A Touch of Nostalgia

My nephew will soon be 40 years old and I have bought him a special card (he doesn't read my blog!)  which lists all the special things that happened during the year he was born :1981  By golly what a nostalgia trip!

It was the year the first London Marathon was held, the very first episode of Only Fools And Horses was broadcast and a colour TV licence went up from £34 to £46 pounds...wow...it will cost £159 this year 👀  In addition severe snow storms hit the UK with the lowest temperature ever recorded in December since 1874 and the heaviest snow since 1878.  And there was no such thing as Global Warming then ⛄⛄⛄⛄  If you click on the photo above you might be able to expand it to read.  It's quite fascinating....

Changing the subject entirely,  a big thank you to all who left comments on my last post.  I'm always grateful to have the sensible opinions of others and, in this case, the overwhelming feeling is that I should report my Covidiot of a neighbour if she has yet another party.  The good news is that I feel a good deal better than I did in the early part of the week but the bad news is that Neighbour's Grandmother has collected the child this morning so the question remains:

Will there be a party tonight and/or tomorrow?😏

I have checked and found that she can be reported online ( they don't want telephone reports in this area) at the time the party is in full swing.  If we are kept awake again this weekend The Gloves Are Off!  My patience is running out......

It's freezing again outside today although the garden does look delightful in the sunshine.  G has wrapped up like an arctic explorer and gone out for his walk to try to ease the pain in his neck (he's still awaiting an MRI scan on his head, neck and spine) but I can't face going out.  I think I'll tackle the ironing instead.  Things must be bad 😂

Have a great weekend everyone and stay safe wherever in the world you happen to be x

  1. I would definitely report the neighbor. One thing I can't abide is being deprived of my sleep.

  2. Hello Angie,
Well, it is truly incredible o think that 1981 is 40 years ago now when it seems, at least in our heads, that it was just yesterday. Where have all these decades gone?

And, talking of 40 years, how shocking is the rise in cost of a television licence! We have totally lost touch as we have not had a television for 40 years. Many wonder how we live without one but we have found it liberating to be without it and, during lockdown, it has been great to be able to watch endless old television series on Youtube.

Yes, take control of the neighbour situation. It will make you feel so much better. People can be so selfish and unthinking.

    1. Time is flying isnt it Jane. Not sure I could manage without a TV though as we don't often use YouTube and like to watch a good drama in the evening.

  3. Do they not consider the grandmother and why is she being so stupid mixing with them. Rules are for us all, including those wonderful souls who work in the NHS who will have to care for the idiots if they are sick with it. We are having short walks mist days, but boy it's cold outside.

    1. Neighbour's grandmother is 77 and so high risk. The problem is that young neighbour believes all the hype about the virus being fake. During a short (distanced) conversation just before this lockdown when I gave her a parcel I had taken in for her she said she didn't know a single person who had had the virus and it was all exaggerated. If her grandma gets it she's sunk, because she's her childcare so she can go to work.

  4. Good for you!

Our oldest was born in 1976 and it is so hard to believe that he will be 45 this year. Isn't it amazing how they age.

    God bless.

  5. I find it very hard to get my head around 1981 being 40 years ago! My eldest son is 40 in two years and I think how can that be I'm far too young!

    1. I know just what you mean! I can't believe I'm 71 because I feel much younger in my head!

  7. It's so stressful having that type of a neighbor. It's like being in an abusive marriage. I recently reported a neighbor to Building and Safety for encroachment. The abuse has been ongoing, and going through the county has made a huge difference. The fines are severe. Consequences make all the difference.

  8. My son was 40 at the end of last week, that card would have been perfect to remind him how old he is. Like me though he's very young acting and thinking for his age, so perhaps rubbing it in might have been a bit tactless ;-)

  9. Interesting to read of the very low temperatures in 1981, when my friend and I were ranting about the bitterly cold winda and constant rain we're having. We were be-moaning the fact that we can't remember it ever being so cold . . . . etc, etc. Oh how the passing of time distorts our memories! We're both in our mid-70s so I'm sure we've experienced much colder weather previously - and in those bygone days we didn't have central heating, double glazing and carpeted floors.
