The Reason I've been AWOL

I know it's been a while since I posted properly but I have been 'in the wars' again 😏

For several weeks now, I have been developing pain in my hip and lower back which I'm sure, in part, is due to being so inactive over the last year.  I have been struggling to walk far or to get up from a sitting position, and the pain has been excruciating.  I rang the GP's surgery for advice and was given a telephone appointment with a GP for Monday 12th April.  I actually made the enquiry on 30th March so the appointment was almost 2 weeks away.  In desperation, I steeled myself to visit the pharmacy in the local supermarket and was given the advice to take Ibuprofen and Paracetamol in combination.  Now, I didn't think you were supposed to do that, especially with my IBS problem (now under control, thankfully) but desperate times call for desperate measures so they say.  The pain is a little easier but it certainly hasn't gone.  I have no idea whether or not the GP can help tomorrow.  Time will tell....

What strange weather we are having again.  On Good Friday our daughter and her family came to visit us in the garden.  At first it was cold and windy so we all wrapped up in warm coats and scarves and sat (well spaced) in the garden.  It gave me such a lovely warm feeling to see and speak to them all and have a 'proper' conversation between the 6 of us instead of a 'bitty' one via video link.  By 1pm it had warmed up somewhat so DD drove to the local chippie and bought us fish and chips as well as pies for the boys which she shared out onto plates for us all.  It was the best day G and I have had since Christmas Day.  The family went home around 3pm and it was at that point that the sun broke through (typical!) so G and I stayed in the garden, sitting in the sun wearing short sleeves and drinking mugs of tea...bliss.

This morning I woke at 8am and found it was snowing.  Strange weather....

The allotment is beginning to show signs of  glorious growth.  We have picked the first of the forced rhubarb and G has sown:

Peas, broad beans, radishes, lettuce and planted some potatoes. The raspberry canes, blackberry bush and grape vine are all putting on spurts of greenery as well as the two apple trees.  I love to see signs of new growth, hope for the future.

We were so sorry to hear of the death of Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh,  but he has had a good life and done wonderful things for our young folk with his Award scheme.  I respected him for his plain speaking too. Rest in Peace.

What I thought was wrong was the BBC removing all their usual programmes from around 4.30pm onwards on 3 channels in order to give coverage to the Royal story.  If people were not depressed at the outset, they certainly would be at the end of watching the story all evening. Gardener's World is our favourite prog on a Friday and was sorely missed.  It was shown last night instead and we only just realised in time to watch it 😡

My hip is hurting now after sitting to write this so I'll sign off.

Stay safe everyone wherever in the world you happen to be x

  1. Hope your GP is able to help you tomorrow, being in pain is no fun. Our weather is crazy this spring, its hard to plan anything, the weather is almost always different than the previous nights forecast. I do agree with you changing all programming on all BBC channels was a bit much, he was a good man, but it was over done.

  2. I do hope the GP can help you tomorrow, this cold weather can't be helping things either :-(

Yes it was strange to have so many channels all completely devoted to Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh's sad death. Luckily I watch mostly Channel Four on Fridays so my programmes were unaffected and I was quite amazed that even though they did do a special programme early in the evening and devoted most of the news to this, they still got slated for not cancelling all other programming.

We are all in desperate need of some light-hearted entertainment at the moment and this has made for a very down-beat weekend for some of us.

  3. I hope you feel better soon. I was laid up with sciatica for 3weeks so I understand your desperation! I agree the virtual usual tv blackout was overwhelming. Do much do the BBC put a complaints form on line yesterday! I too liked and respected the Prince for his no nonsense straight talking attitude.

  4. I feel for you as I am in pain every day with my hip and back. I have had an xray and have arthritis in my hip and a problem with my sacroiliac joint. Luckily I am okay once sat down but have had to buy a tall stool to sit on to cook and wash up etc. As I would not have an op I am just putting up with it but it is a nightmare.
I will be interested to hear what your doctor recommends for you.
As for the taking off of our fav programmes, I was annoyed as well.

  5. I do hope the GP will be able to help tomorrow, not good to be in such pain for that amount of time. So glad you were able to get together with family over the Easter period. The weather here has been strange too intermittent snow predominately. Take care.

  6. I'm so sorry you have been having such pain in your hip and back. Hopefully it may just go like pains sometimes do. What a lovely family day you had. All these wonderful pleasures we used to take granted and now are so special. I really enjoyed reading it.

  7. Please can I join you in the 'hip pain' corner? I feel that it's the enforced inactivity of the last year that has caused our supporting muscles to become so weak that our joints are becoming so weak and useless. I daren't go outside for a walk because my hip suddenly lets me down, along with a sharp pain and without something to lean on, I can't go any further. I have taken Ibuprofen as a last resoert, which has helped, but like you I've heard that Ibuprofen harms the body. I just pray that I don't need a hip replacement. :(

  8. I also have trouble with my hips and lower back especially after sitting too long. I get up and move around, things are okay for awhile. I hope you get some good answers from the GP.

    God bless.

  9. I always enjoy reading your blog and can't remember if I've ever commented. But since I too am troubled with hip and back pain, this post really was a comfort to read ...sometimes I feel like I'm the only one. It sure affects what I can do and for how long...even the simplest things. Ibuprofen is what I take in moderation, as well as realizing when to just rest.
Prince Philip's passing is sad, but he leaves a wonderful legacy. It has been nice to see all the pictures of the Royal family throughout the years that have been in the media.
Your vegetable and fruit garden will certainly be a pleasure in the coming weeks.
    Blessings, Linda

  10. It sounds like osteoarthritis to me. I have had both of my hips replaced. The relief has been phenomenal. I would get an x-ray if I were you. It can intensify suddenly.
