I Dreaded This Very Thing...

My regular dental checkup in September last year was cancelled due to Covid-19 and I have absolutely dreaded either of us having a problem with our teeth during lockdown .  Well, yesterday the worst happened and a tooth broke in half whilst eating my lunchtime sarnie.  I promptly rang the surgery to request an emergency appointment and they can fit me in next TUESDAY afternoon, so I will have to suffer for almost a week before I can be seen, let alone have the tooth treated.  I really hope they can save the tooth because, after G's horrendous experience of an extraction (and a dry socket) a couple of years ago, I am petrified of having it removed under local anaesthetic 👀  It will be costly but I would rather my regular dentist try to save it.  Fingers crossed that he can.... Meanwhile it's soft food only and try to chew on the other side 😏

It's such a struggle to get anything treated right now, isn't it.  Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Thanks for popping in and stay safe, my friends, wherever in the world you happen to be x

  1. I had a problem in the first lockdown. No dentists were actually open then so it was very difficult to get help. I had antibiotics prescribed over the phone. It got sorted eventually when the dentist received the correct PPE equipment to open and treat emergencies. My dentist is up and running pretty much normally now. A week to wait sounds an awfully long time. I hope you are not in too much pain. I can tell you I have had an extraction under local. I honestly felt nothing and I was so relieved to get the tooth out. It is so good these days. If you are careful and do exactly what the dentist tells you it is rare to get dry socket pain. After weeks of pain last year I am feeling your pain with you. If you rang them back and said you were in pain they should see you. Good luck.

    1. Thank you so much for your comment Janipi. I really am dreading having to have the tooth out but it's good to hear that you had a positive outcome from your extraction. I did ring the dentist again yesterday but still no luck, I'm afraid, so Tuesday it will have to be, although the receptionist did promise to give me any cancellations they get x

  2. I lost a tooth last week, a couple days before my dental appointment, which on the morning was cancelled by the dentist. I hope you are OK between now and Tuesday.

  4. My dentist sends me advertising blurb about this treatment and that treatment, but when I ring up to make an appointment for a check up they say they are doing emergencies only. Four months overdue now.

    1. I know you look after your teeth too, Ilona, so it must be frustrating. My checkup was due in September but was cancelled so I'm 6 months overdue. My dentist is pretty good and I think he might have seen the problem coming had I been able to get my checkup as usual.

  5. I have cancelled a couple of appointments this year. I have another coming up the middle of next month. Hope Covid cases are down enough to let me feel comfortable going to this one.

Hope you can save your tooth.

    God bless.

    1. Thank you, MM, luckily it's more discomfort than pain so I'm just counting the days until Tuesday.

  7. Sorry to hear you have broken your tooth and hope you can get it fixed soon without causing you more discomfort. My dentist is still only doing emergencies so haven't seen them in well over a year.

    1. Beverley, I think there must be a lot of people putting up with dental discomfort at the moment. Once things settle down the dentists will be inundated with work. The nation's teeth must be suffering like never seen in years :(

  8. The letter Tom received from the Government told him that the NHS was there for him if needed. I think they are living in cuckoo land !

  9. I do hope the dentist can save the tooth for you, it would be so much better, even if it ends up needing a cap at least having the root in place will be better.

    Good luck. xx

  10. Darling Angie,

Well, a very positive aspect of living in Budapest is the dental treatment.
    All
First, all dentists are highly qualified since they must qualify as a doctor first before they undergo further training for dentistry. As a result, they are well able to advise about a number of medical conditions as well as dealing with one's teeth.

Our dentist has a private dental practice created from part of his apartment. So, we simply have to go out from our front door and a short step into his front door to the surgery. Everything up to date and highly professional. Indeed, in extremis, he has seen us on a Saturday morning after ringing his doorbell!

Finally, dental treatment is much less expensive in Hungary than the UK, hence large numbers of tourists come for 'dental holidays'. Implants and crowns which are ruinously expensive in the UK are very affordable here. And, when having dental treatment, the dentists always pays attention to how the finished result looks cosmetically. It is not just about fixing the problem.
So, when lockdown is released, borders opened, flights not cancelled.....Budapest can be recommended as a dental destination!

    1. Oh how comforting, Jane & Lance, to know dental treatment is just a step away. NOW I know why so many people go to Hungary for treatment! I could really do with a good dentist at the moment as it's so difficult to chew on one side of my mouth. I think I will be heartily sick of mashed potato and soup by next Tuesday!

  11. Two missing fillings now but am still nervous about the whole process so am waiting for second jab and a low community count before starting treatments. Also time to save up!
