A Weekend Treat

As we have been spending far more on our foodshop than ever before,  I have not been  ordering cake or many sweet treats in the online order.  We have recently felt the need for a sugar fix  so I succumbed to temptation and ordered an Afternoon Tea box from Morrisons . Costing just £15 including delivery, it arrived right on time this morning. 'Simon' rang the bell and the sturdy box was left on the door mat.  It contained a nice, fresh, sliced loaf, a box of lemon bakewell tarts, 4 scones, a scrumptious chocolate cake,  a small packet of teabags......

All packed neatly and, thankfully, unsquashed 😉 ........

Beneath those was a cold package and inside the fleece were 2 ice packs, some Cravendale milk, clotted cream and 4 tiny pots of strawberry jam for the scones, and two packs of sandwich fillings; egg mayo and cheese & onion.......

The fleece will be used on the allotment and the cardboard box recycled.  Actually, on second thoughts, the box can be composted too.  We will soon be taking up all the spent vegetable matter to put on the compost heap so cardboard will be a useful addition to that.....

I did try to write this post on my tablet but Blogger had other ideas so please excuse the apparent random-ness of the photos.  They are not in the order in which I actually wanted them!

Anyway, I added up the cost of the items which came to £11.09 plus the jam.  I couldn't find the small jars on the website so have added on a normal jar of the same brand at £2.60 making a total of £13.69
This leaves just £1.31 which I could have saved by shopping instore myself .  In my view, £1.31 for having someone drop it at the door on a designated day with a 1 hour time slot is a 'no brainer' as they say.  I am safely indoors and just had to wipe everything down with sanitiser before putting things away. G will think he's in heaven when he gets back from work too!!

I have arranged to meet DD and her family this afternoon in a local pub/restaurant to have a meal together because we aren't allowed to meet in our homes right now.  Masks will be worn until the meals arrive at the table (table service only) and I will be taking my own cutlery in a plastic bag.   I have downloaded the NHS test and trace App ( I did it on launch day) and will scan the QR code on entry.  We are trying to do everything by the rules but I still worry.  I do need to see the family though, we are all struggling with isolation in one way or another.

Has anyone else downloaded the App?  Do you think it will work in reducing numbers of infections?
If you live in another country do you have a similar App there too?

Stay safe everyone, wherever in the world you happen to be x

  1. I did download it but I'm staying away from public places other than supermarkets. The tea is a great treat.

  2. You are the second blogger who has raved about the Morrisons teatime treat. It does seem very good value - and lovely for people who are shut in. My OH did download the app, but it kept flattening his phone battery so he removed it again.

    1. If I leave mine on, just quietly scanning in the background, I've discovered that it uses around 5% battery per day which is ok. If I constantly check it and read instructions it has links to, then it uses more.

    1. Yes, Poppy, we want to do everything we can to help beat this.

  4. The afternoon tea box is a great idea for a treat and as you say the extra cost is negligible compared to saving you going out. I’ve downloaded the app, not that I go to many places with lots of people, but I thought I ought to.

    1. We don't go out very often to mingle with other people either, Ann, but i felt it was my duty to download it anyway

  5. I haven't downloaded it. It irks me that it has been named the 'NHS app' when it is nothing to do with the NHS, and is run, badly, by a private company at a cost of 15 billion pounds... most of which can't be accounted for, and is headed up by Matt Hancock's mate who is married to a Tory peer. Corruption abounds, as does the incompetence.
My daughter was contacted by track and trace after a former colleague tested positive. The service was shambolic, giving her 2 different dates to isolate from, including the day that they rang her, rather than the last time she had been in contact with him which was 7 days earlier. They contacted her by text, she completed all her details as requested, then they contacted her by phone, saying the systems were different, so they didnt know her details had been completed!
I leave my details if I visit anywhere, and I know that the risk is high in my area as we've been in local lockdown for around 10 weeks, with pubs, cafes, restaurants set to close again, not that we've been able to meet anyone outside our household in one anyway.
I can see no end to it; the incompetence is criminal.

    1. I know the system has been described as shambolic, Scarlet, but I feel the need to toe the line anyway. The end is definitely not in sight yet....

  6. I've not done the NHS app, my phone is a smart phone but a cheap one so doesn't like apps.
I'm not bothered and think it's a huge waste of money. One of the ladies in a WI signed up to work at test and trace and is being paid for sitting at home refreshing her laptop every 10 minutes with no positives to trace for weeks on end.

  7. Yes I have the App, but as I haven't been anywhere other than the supermarket since I loaded it, it is just telling me that we are in a 'high risk' area. I will leave it on my phone as it rather handily gives you all the 'rules' for your area and as I have relatives in 3 of the UK countries and usually move myself between two of them it's handy for reference as to what I should be doing.

The afternoon tea box looks brilliant. Imagine what it would cost you for afternoon tea for two or four people if you went out for it. What a lovely treat, although I think I would have preferred brown bread.

    1. Yes, Sue, I keep checking the 'rules' as they seem to change on a regular basis!
I would have preferred brown bread in my box too but G will only eat white so it won't be wasted and I have a small brown loaf in the freezer.

  8. Yes I have downloaded the Scottish app. What a great afternoon tea, saves having to go out for it, so such a great idea.

  9. That looks like a lovely box. It really helps to have some comfort food during this pandemic. I splurged on a Pepperidge Farm coconut cake for my birthday last week. I hope you enjoy your meal out with family. That's interesting that you can eat in a restaurant, but not in your home. I find all these rules very odd...

  10. We have a Corona app that keeps track on other phones with that app. If you get infected with covid19, you'll get a code you have to type in the app. After that it sends warning to other phones that have been near you for more than 15min. "You have been in close contact with someone with confirmed corona infection, please self isolate and contact your local health advisor". All anonymous and secure, no need to actually do anything else that load it from the app store.
