Creeping Prices

Other bloggers have mentioned it and I am certainly noticing the stealthy increase in prices week by week at the moment.  Some increases have been 10% but others much more.  The tins of broken grapefruit I buy have gone up from 35p to 50p and the ice lollies for the GC up from £1 to £1.10  for example.  I don't know whether it's a drop in the value of the pound which is causing it or whether Brexit is just an excuse for a hike.  Will the pound shops have to be rebranded 'One Pound Ten' shops I wonder .... !! :D

When I bought my little VW car 6 years ago it came with the promise of FREE MOT's for LIFE!  (for my car ...not me!) Great, I thought, money saving at it's best.  3 years later my MOT cost £29 as free was 'unsustainable' they said.  I have just had an email saying that £29 is now 'unsustainable' and my MOT this year (and I quote) has "a slight price change" to £39 ! Now I don't know about you but I don't feel that a hike of almost 34.5% is a slight increase.  I know it's still cheaper than the RRP but still....I feel quite cheated.

Today's shopping came in at £25.57 which included a bottle of wine @ £3.75 as well as some Gaviscon @ £3.78, which I like to keep in the caravan 'just in case'.  There are also a couple of things for the crate of holiday groceries.

Total spend so far for January is £89.64

I really want to cap spending at £100 so there's not much left to play with :/ watch this space....

Thanks everso for popping in x

  1. I hate to say it, but you are fortunate with your £39 MOT. Ours is more like £54. But yes, food prices are on the increase, I have also noticed this.

  2. I know it's still cheaper Margaret but one of the selling points for my car was 'FREE MOT's for life!' :/

    1. Yes, I agree - Free for life should mean what it says.

  3. You are right - I've noticed the prices going up since Christmas - I suppose VW have got to get some cash back in to make up for all the fines that they're going to be charged for not telling the truth about car emissions - 34% increase this year is just plain naughty though x

  5. Very annoying to be told one thing then have the offer changed, I would be unimpressed too.

I have noticed prices increasing too, I was glad to visit somewhere with a market at the weekend so I could buy some decent veg at a good price, I'm preparing it all for the freezer today to tide us over until the next visit.

  6. Sadly whilst the price remains the same in places like Poundland the contents of packets are getting smaller.

  7. It's either a price rise or smaller packs, we do a lot of shoppron line and the prices are going up everywhere.

  8. Prices up, contents in packs shrinking, meals under strict portion control, treats limited and no waste strategy in place - only thing not slimming is my waist line!! My husband had his ride on mower serviced - £400+ - we could have brought a whole car for less!!!

  9. Similar to your pound store we have $1 stores which changed to $1.25 stores about 4 years ago. I think the size of packages has gone down significantly in the last year or so. The price of meat here is horrendous. Grocery stores only carry about half the amount that they used to as people are not buying it because they just can't afford it.

    1. Crikey, and I thought I was joking about the poundshop name change :/ Luckily I don't eat meat Janice so I save a bit that way. Things are definitely getting tougher.
