Disgusting Coffee and Girl On The Train

My heart always sinks when I see the tag 'new improved' product on absolutely anything so when I saw it on my favourite coffee; Nescafe, I debated whether or not to risk £5 of my food budget on a 300g jar (with 50% extra free) I did risk it and sorely regret it :/  The new jar with a snazzy red lid contains the most awful instant coffee. The smell is different (not at all tempting) and the taste is nothing like I'm used to.  I emailed Nestle asking about the changes and got this reply:

Dear Angela
Thank you for contacting us about Nescafé.

We were sorry to hear of your recent disappointment with the product.

Any changes to our products are the result of rigorous research and development as we believe in producing products with a great taste, consistent levels of quality and safety, value for money and convenience.

The new recipe indicated with a red lid is replacing the old blend.

We always value feedback from our consumers and this is particularly important when loyal consumers comment on any changes we have made. We will pass your feedback to the brand team who take on board all the comments they receive for future product development.

Thank you once again for taking the trouble to contact us. We hope that in future you will enjoy our products. (Not a cat in hell's chance of enjoying your coffee! and that bit wasn't in the original reply :D )
Kind Regards

Grrr... £5 wasted....

Has anyone else tried the new red lidded jar of Nescafe?  What do you think of it?

It seems that several of you have read the book and I must admit it would be one that I would have left on the shelf but for DD lending it to me.  Once I began reading, however, I couldn't put it down!  It's written in the style of darting to and fro from past to present and back again but with shortish chapters giving other character's viewpoints as well. It kept me gripped the whole way through.  The lead character, Rachel, is absolutely infuriating and I wanted to shake her sometimes but alcohol abuse has it's own problems, I guess.  I guessed who the perpetrator was long before the end but thoroughly enjoyed the book.

What did you think of it?

Well I have my PJ's on, the kettle is on (for a nice cup of tea) and I'm ready to hunker down.  I'll watch Countrywise at 8pm them TV off and a nice read.  I'm currently reading a Jenny Colgan Book (I LOVE that woman!)

Stay warm and safe everyone and thanks for popping in x

  2. Cease forthwith drinking instant muck at once, girl! Buy ground coffee instead! We have been buying Belarom coffee in Lidl's for years and it's excellent and a packet lasts us well over a week, and it's not a fiver either. Two scoops in a cafetierre, add just-off-the-boil water and allow to stand while you warm some milk (just to take the chill off from the fridge, not to get it really hot and scummy) and then milk into a lovely china cup, depress the plunger in the cafetiere, pour and enjoy! You won't go back to instant muck of any kind once you've got used to having proper coffee. Our son now even buys the beans and grinds them when he needs them. I've done that in the past, but Belarom is excellent, believe me. Full of flavour, not bitter, very good coffee. Try it.

    1. The problem is, Margaret, that I would have to buy a cafetiere too as OH broke mine a few years back. I'll bear it in mind though :)

    2. Treat yourself to a cafetiere! Tell yourself, "I'm worth it!" That usually does the trick for me, har, har! It needn't be a very expensive one. But I will say, the lovely one our son gave us more than 20 years ago, one that is insulated, is till going strong and it's been used every single day (apart from the couple of times we've been away, we don't go away often, no need to living in Torbay!) and it's still going strong! You won't go back to instant stuff once you start drinking 'proper' coffee. Well, the same goes for most things, once you've had quality items, you won't put up with interior, even if it means doing without some other things, or saving like mad for quality. There is an old saying which I'm sure you know: buy cheap, buy twice.

  4. It is disappointing when favourite products change.
I am with Margaret, since using ground coffee I struggle to drink instant now.

    1. Yay! A ground-coffee-convert, too! And it takes less time for us to make a decent cup of coffee in a cafetiere than my brother-in-law does using his microwave! We don't have a microwave, nor do we want them, but milky coffee with just 1/2 a teaspoon of instant mixed in (per mug) is a nasty drink, and certainly not what I'd call "coffee".
I would also suggest that everyone drinks from a lovely fine china cup; the drink really does taste better from china than pottery.

  5. I don't drink coffee very often preferring tea but my husband does prefer ground coffee. It doesn't work out anymore expensive.

  6. How disappointing and a waste of money. I have to admit I'm another fan of freshly ground coffee. I even have a little cafetiere for one. X

  7. About 20 years ago my daughter was ill in hospital I was staying with her , hubby was allowed to go shopping unsupervised . I returned home to find he had bought a huge jar of shops own instant coffee . He was told in no certain terms that I would not be drinking it , I cannot stand the taste of cheap coffee .
