School Worries

photo from Google

I haven't posted for over a week because I am worried sick about my GD.  She started her new school a day before her birthday and has just not settled.  Each morning over the last month she has felt sick with apprehension, eating no breakfast and very little lunch at school.  The new pupils are paired with a year 10 mentor and, as luck would have it, GD has been paired with a girl who is carer for her sick mother and two siblings, and who has a history of self harm and an eating disorder.  My God, no wonder my daughter is at her wits end.  She has spoken to a teacher and GD is being paired with a different girl.  The school seems to threaten detention for absolutely everything from being a minute late for a lesson to doing badly in tests.  GD has a French language test this morning with a threatened detention for failing.  She has been at the school for just 4 weeks, for heavens sake! No wonder she doesn't want to go.

I feel at my wits end too.  Are there any teachers out there who can offer even a snippet of advice please?  Or any parents who resolved their own child's issues?

I think I have a new follower so a big welcome to you :)  Sorry this is such a downbeat post...

Have a brilliant day everyone, thanks so much for popping in x

  1. I'm not surprised you are concerned. I have no advice to offer I'm afraid but I hope things settle down for her very soon. X

  2. What a terrible school, this comes from them being judged on results alone, I do hope your GD finds a new mentor and can enjoy what should be the best time of her life.

    1. I think you're right there, Marlene. It should be an exciting time rather than terrifying. Thank you x

  3. That sounds terrible, whilst threats can work with some children it doesn't work for all. Results seem to be all that schools these days are concerned about.

    1. So true, MM. I'm the same...threats would put me off completely whereas the phrase " do the very best you can" would spur me on.

  4. How awful, both for you and your GD. It sounds like even if the new mentor is an improvement, the basic attitude and approach of this school is wrong for your GD. Is there a different school option available for her? Or perhaps she could be homeschooled for awhile?

    1. I had the same thoughts, kristie, and I have been Googling home schooling just in case the issues cannot be resolved satisfactorily. I know that other schools in the location are pretty crammed too, but GD was perfectly happy at her infants and primary school which makes me suspect her new school as being the problem. Thank you so much for your response x
