Knitting For Charity... A Question...

Phew! What a busy couple of days we have had.  It was a lovely, mild, sunny (ish) day today so I decided to have a blitz on the venetian blinds while I had the house to myself.  They get so very dusty and are a right pain to clean but they had to be done.  I also did a bit more de-cluttering and a black bin bag full of useless 'stuff' has been put into the skip.  It couldn't be recycled and wasn't good enough for the CS so it has been binned.  I always feel a bit guilty each time I bin a bag of rubbish but the alternative is to keep it which would be silly.  The big pile of washing too has bitten the dust...hooray!...but I now have ironing...Boo!...That will have to wait until tomorrow.

I seem to have my knitting mojo back!  I used to do a lot when the kids were little then lost the urge when it seemed more expensive to knit my own than to buy ready made.  I have been knitting baby things (don't read anything into it though, my poor OH did a double take when he saw what I was knitting..lol..) No, I just like knitting baby clothes. They are finished quickly and the patterns are fairly easy to follow.  This is my latest creation to fit a baby up to 6 months old....

A question for you, dear reader. Does anyone know of a charity which can make use of hand knitted baby items?  I mean things like the little top above, hats, bootees and such like?  If you can point me in the right direction I would be more than happy to make and donate more items.

Does anyone else knit and donate things to charity?

Sorry this is a short post but my quiche is now out of the oven and I need to get into a hot shower to ease my aches and pains :/  See you all tomorrow...x

  1. We have blinds in the spare room, but I try to clean them once a week so they don't get too bad, I have washing out today, it's drying nicely, Instead of taking all unwanted clothing now to the charity shops I have been putting some in the clothing banks, I think they send it over to third world countries or send it out when there is a disaster.

    1. We have Salvation Army clothing collections sometimes here. That's always a useful way to recycle as they too hand out clothing to the needy.

  2. How about your local Friends of the hospital, or if you knit small, the prem baby unit.

    1. Another good idea, thank you KN. Re the blinds: I bought one of those three pronged thingies but it was worse than useless so I vacuum the worst of the dust off and finish with a wipe over with a microfibre cloth ( both sides of the blind) It still takes ages :(

  4. Lovely knitting. Have you looked at Una's blog at http://bagsofwool.blogspot.co.uk, she also knits for charity so you may pick up some ideas for suitable charities to knit for, otherwise there may be something on one of the knitting for charity websites such as http://www.ukhandknitting.com/knitting_for_charity.php. A google search may throw up opportunities in your local area which will avoid the cost of postage.
Your local hospital may take hand knits for maternity or preemie size, but it's worth checking with them first. Our local hospital used to take handknits for the special care baby unit but no longer take them as now that they've outsourced the washing in order to keep on top of infection control everything has to be washable at 70 degrees. However our local children's ward take hand knitted teddies to give to their patients for being brave. It may be worth a few phone calls to investigate the possibilities. Sorry not to be more helpful. maybe a car boot stall in the better weather & give your proceeds to a charity. Have fun knitting. Looking forward to finding out what you decide to do, best wishes, Vee x

  6. Beautiful knitting..Our Thimbles group send knitted items to the local Childrens Hospital, the prem baby unit is always in need of little hats and bootees, but nothing fancy or lacy as the babies get their fingers stuck in the holes :-)

  7. I knit, crochet and make cards for charities and my latest project has been knitting little chicks for our local hospice I put a little Easter egg inside and they sell very well. Also recently I found a site called The Liitle Yellow Duck project and am knitting for that. I have a friend who knits little mice for the cat protection society.

Good luck in your knitting. Hazel c uk
