On Feeling Rough

I seem to have been fighting off bugs since just after Christmas when Dear Daughter & the Grandchildren very kindly off loaded some on to me :/   Just as I feel the lurgy is beginning to lift I get up next morning and feel worse!  Now I have developed a tickly cough which is embarrassing , to say the least, when in company.  The feeling starts like a feather in the throat  and off I go, coughing and coughing until the tears run down my cheeks and my nose runs.  I seemed to do nothing but cough during the night, despite taking some cough supressing medicine before I went to bed, consequently I feel worse than ever this morning.  I'm still in my PJ's as I type this ( currently 9.53am) What a state to be in....oh, and I haven't mentioned the fact that I need to cross my legs as I cough!!

Is anyone else out there suffering?  Winter bugs are a nightmare, aren't they.  Any tips to help stop this awful cough will be much appreciated....please?

Thanks for visiting.  At least, my keyboard friends, I cannot pass this bug on to you! x

  1. We had it 3 weeks ago and still have the cough,it has to work it's way out of your system. My doctor suggested I drink hot juice rather than tea and coffee, which has helped line my throat. I am old fashioned, each night I rub Vick's vapor rub into my neck, and I sleep on three pillows, it does help me. Hope you are better soon.

  2. Our daughter in law to be has had a week off work with something nasty that included a cough that kept them both awake all night. Seems it's everywhere. We've been lucky so far, avoiding people helps!

  5. If you take codeine (e.g. co-codamol) it is supposed to suppress the cough reflex (told to me by my GP). A tablespoon of cider vinegar in water is good to sip every time you start coughing. I quite like the taste but if you don't, I suppose you could dissolve honey in hot water then add the vinegar. I hope it helps you.

    1. You can buy codeine linctus which acts on the brain ( like the similar opiate morphine) to stop the cough reflex. Suppressing gives some night relief but sometimes if the cough is productive it shouldn't be suppressed - and codeine gives the most awful constipation!!!!!

    2. Oh crikey, yes, when OH took some after a hernia op he was in a right old state :/ It's ok in the short term if desperate, I think.

  6. There's nothing worse than a cough that keep you awake at night. When I was a kid my Mum used to feed us hot honey, rum and butter. Maybe this would help to soothe your throat and help you sleep! Jx

  7. Oh dear, poor you, you have my sympathy. I am in exactly the same situation - sitting up in bed using 5 pillows to prop myself up tonight. The only thing I've found to help with the cough at all is steam inhalation and I have done that tonight before going to bed. Fingers crossed that we all shift it soon.

  8. I'm sorry you're unwell. Grandchildren do have a way of leaving us the gift of their germs. Have you been to the doctor? That cough sounds nasty.

  9. Thank you all so much for your kind and helpful comments. I have taken them all on board and tried the juice, honey & lemon, and an extra pillow. Dear Blimey, I hope you feel better soon too :( I feel marginally better today so perhaps the bugs have decided I am no longer any fun :)
